Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A TINCTURE?

A tincture is a concentrated plant extract in liquid form. They can be made from roots, leaves, flowers, and other plant parts. They are convenient, cost effective (especially when compared to pharmaceuticals) and excellent for supporting health and well being. Tinctures have a long history of medicinal use and remain as effective as ever.

WHY SHOULD I TAKE A TINCTURE?

Potency and practicality. Tinctures contain an extraordinarily high concentration of herb. Way more than your average cup of tea, ounce for ounce. Tinctures are also practical due to their portability, shelf life, and ease of use, when compared to some other forms of herbal medicine.

HOW DO YOU TAKE A TINCTURE?

Tinctures can be easily integrated into your day by adding them to whatever’s already in your cup; water, tea, seltzer, juice, or smoothies. They can also be a lovely functional bitters when featured in cocktails and mocktails. Try a Nice Time Old Fashioned, it's a fan favorite!

HOW MUCH IS A DROPPER?

The recommended serving of Nice Time is 2-3 droppers. One dropper is the amount in the pipette after one single squeeze of the dropper bulb. The pipette will not be entirely full. To take 3 droppers, submerge the pipette cap all the way into the bottle as if you are going to screw on the cap. Then squeeze the bulb one time. Remove the pipette and hold it over your beverage. Squeeze the bulb again to release the tincture into your beverage. This is "one dropper". Repeat these steps two more times for a serving of 3 droppers.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "WHOLE PLANT FORMULAS"?

Modern technologies sometimes lead to isolated plant constituents getting all the attention. This happens when the research industrial complex identifies individual molecules from plants (or other organisms) which can be isolated or synthesized, then patents them to sell for a high profit. Research is done showing a molecule’s action on the body with the implication that the rest of the organism is superfluous and the resulting product is superior to the original whole plant.

Those modern products are often inspired by traditional herbalism remedies, but are changed into something fundamentally different than what occurs in nature and do not reflect the way that humans have used nature as medicine throughout recorded and pre-recorded history.

This aggressive approach is what sometimes leads to bad press for plants. When isolated constituents are used in this fashion, it can lead to unwanted effects on the body that do not occur when using time-tested gentle methods of working with whole plants.

This is what we mean; we use whole plants extracted in traditional ways that are gentle on the body and are generally accepted as safe.

WHY OTHER PLANTS?

We are proud of our commitment to quality, safety and sustainability. The plants we choose to work with are not at risk of extinction and have no known contraindications. (United Plant Savers is a great place to learn more about at-risk plants.) Our manufacturing partners source from ethical farms and responsible wildcrafters and use certified organic herbs whenever possible. Our formulas are rigorously tested for impurities and are produced in an FDA registered facility that follows good manufacturing practices. These steps allow us to consistently deliver a product that is efficacious, safe, and of superior quality.

WHY DO TINCTURES CONTAIN ALCOHOL?

Alcohol is a potent time-tested tool for extracting and preserving herbal constituents. This double duty power makes alcohol our menstruum of choice for many herbal preparations. Alcohol is also natural- it occurs in many places in nature and has been used as a tool for health across cultures and generations. Problems with alcohol arise when consuming much larger amounts than are in a serving of tincture.

HOW MUCH ALCOHOL IS IN A TINCTURE?

The recommended serving of Nice Time Mood Tincture (3 droppers or 2ml) contains ~1ml or 0.0352 oz of alcohol, equivalent to 1/17th or 6% of a standard drink like a 5oz glass of wine or 12oz light beer. Similarly to many over-the-counter cold and flu remedies, kombucha, and other products, this very small amount of alcohol does not cause intoxication or drowsiness. Nonetheless, please consult with your physician if pregnant or nursing.

WILL NICE TIME TINCTURE MAKE ME SLEEPY?

No! While it is true that some anxiolytic (anxiety calming) or nervine (nerve relaxing) herbs are categorized as hypnotic (herbalist talk for sleep inducing), Nice Time has been carefully formulated to support alert, sociable relaxation. You can take Nice Time before a work meeting, a date, a performance, or any time you want support for feeling relaxed, confident, comfortable, and alert.

WILL NICE TIME TINCTURE MAKE ME INEBRIATED OR INTOXICATED?

No! One reason people enjoy the calming, uplifting mood boost of Nice Time is it’s lack of intoxicating effects. Nice Time is non-sedative and will not inhibit your ability to drive a car, operate heavy machinery, or make clear headed decisions.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE?

Because the plants are macerated in alcohol they will last for years…. way longer than it will take you to finish your bottle.

CAN HERBS CURE MY COLD/HEARTACHE/ANXIETY?

Tinctures aren’t magic bullets, but when combined with other healthy lifestyle choices they can be very helpful for a variety of everyday stressors. Further, some plants have a rapid effect on the body while others build up over time. Our formulations are balanced, safe, and designed to work with a wide variety of bodies and lifestyles. For more acute problems, we suggest seeing a clinical herbalist who will review your full medical history.

CAN I USE TINCTURES IF I'M ON PRESCRIPTION MEDS?

Some herbs can interfere with the way certain medications are absorbed by the body. The herbs in Nice Time do not have this effect and are safe to take concurrently with prescription medication.
